When you define a printer that uses the Barr ASCII printer driver, you must choose the printer type. This enables the Barr software to send printer commands to the printer.
For most selections, the Barr software automatically sets lines-per-form and lines-per-inch on the printer, so you do not have to adjust these settings manually. See the Lines-per-form and lines-per-inch settings topic for a description of the settings provided by the Barr software.
The printer type selections fall into four categories.
Generic generates simple ASCII data without printer commands, such as lines-per-form and lines-per-inch settings. This is typically used when you want to send straight ASCII or when you want to print to a laser printer and provide your own commands using overlays.
Line printers for which the software sends lines-per-form and lines-per-inch control codes One or more nonprinting characters used by a computer program to control the actions of a device, used in printing, communications, and management of display screens..
Line printers, with VFU (Vertical Forms Unit) support, for which the software sends lines-per-form and lines-per-inch control codes and implements VFU commands.
PCL Acronym for Printer Control Language. Hewlett-Packard uses this language in its LaserJet, DeskJet, and RuggedWriter printer lines. causes the Barr ASCII printer driver to send simple PCL commands to the printer to set the lines-per-inch and lines-per-page for the print document. It can be used with any HP LaserJet or compatible PCL printer, and treats the printer as if it was a simple line printer. This option is mainly for backward compatibility with the Barr DOS products. If you want to print to a PCL printer, you will typically use the device driver provided by the printer manufacturer instead of the Barr ASCII printer driver.
Complete the following steps.
Open the Printers folder, if is not already displayed.
Right-click the printer you just defined using the Barr ASCII printer driver and select Properties.
From the printer Properties dialog box, select the Device Settings tab.
Select Printer Type in the Printer Driver Device Settings tree. If your line printer is not in the Printer Types list, check the Printer control codes table for a compatible selection. Compare the control codes in the table to the control codes listed in your printer manual to determine if one of the selections will work.
Click OK.
