Using the Viewer

Viewer

By using the Viewer you can view or reprint spool documents. If you view a document that has overstrike characters, the overstrike characters display as consecutive characters on the Viewer screen. The following links show you how to use the Viewer.

When a document is in the Viewing state, you cannot modify the attributes of that document on the Spool Window. To edit the document properties, you must close the Viewer and change the document state to Hold. If you view a SYSIN data set (other than the first data set), the first data set will be changed to the Hold state. This prevents improper routing when data sets within the job are being viewed.

Selecting the view mode

Complete the following steps to select how you would like to view the document, as text, records, or binary codes.

  1. Open the Viewer utility.

  2. On the menu bar, select View | Text, Record, or Binary. If you switch between view modes (Text, Record, or Binary), the Viewer will display the first page of the document. If you switch between data formats (for example, ASCII and EBCDIC), the Viewer will continue to display the current page, not the cursor position. You can also switch the viewing mode using the Text Mode, Record Mode, or Binary Mode toolbar buttons.

Text – Displays the document in text mode. The document will open using the code page specified in the data set header. If there is no code page defined, then code page 37 (EBCDIC) is used.

Record – Displays the document in record mode. The document will open using the code page specified in the data set header. If there is no code page defined, then code page 37 (EBCDIC) is used.

Binary – Displays the document in binary mode. The document will open using the code page specified in the data set header. If there is no code page defined, then code page 37 (EBCDIC) is used.

  1. Select a code page for viewing the document. The selected code page will remain across all viewing modes. You can select a code page using one of the following methods:

  2. On the menu bar, select View | Select Code Page or select the Select Code Page toolbar button. From the Select Code Page dialog box, you can select a code page for viewing the document and select defaults for the Code Page A and Code Page E shortcut menu and toolbar options.

  3. On the menu bar, select View | Code Page A or select the Code Page A toolbar button. This will display the document using the code page specified for code page A. To select a different code page for code page A, select View | Select Code Page on the menu bar.

  4. On the menu bar, select View | Code Page E or select the Code Page E toolbar button. This will display the document using the code page specified for code page E. To select a different code page for code page E, select View | Select Code Page on the menu bar.

  5. On the menu bar, select View | Default Code Page or select the Default Code Page toolbar button. This will display the document using the data set's default code page for viewing the document.

  7. Click OK.

Printing a test page

Use this feature to verify printer forms (for example, invoices, checks, and so on) are aligned correctly, before you print multiple pages. Headers and trailers are not printed. Complete the following steps to print the current page displayed in the Viewer.

The Binary view mode does not support this functionality. The only printing option available to Binary mode is Print Local.

  1. Open the Viewer utility.

  2. Go to the page you want to print.

  3. Click the Print Test Page toolbar button, or on the menu bar, select File | Print Test Page.

The current page (as defined by the page number on the status bar) is queued back to the spooler with a state of Ready Test Page. The page waits in the Spool Window for an available printer with matching routing criteria. The Viewer remains open and advances to the next page. The page that displays is automatically set as the first page in the reprint range. You can continue using the Viewer as needed.

If you exit the Viewer before the test page prints, the test page will be canceled. The document state will change to Hold or to a reprint state if specified.

  1. Ready the appropriate printer with matching routing criteria. The printer prints the test page then returns to the Ready state. The document state changes to Test Page.

After a test page is printed, the printer remains locked to the document until the remainder of the document is printed, or a reprint later command is issued. If you close the Viewer without performing one of those actions, the document state will change to Hold and the printer will be available to other documents.

  1. You can print the remainder of the document a variety of ways from the Viewer.

  2. To print the remaining pages of the document, click the Print Remainder toolbar button, or on the menu bar, select File | Print Remainder. After printing, the printer is available to other documents.

  3. To print the specified reprint range now, click the Reprint Now toolbar button, or on the menu bar, select File | Reprint Now. After printing, the printer is available to other documents.

  4. To print the specified reprint range later, click the Reprint Later toolbar button, or on the menu bar, select File | Reprint Later. The document will change to the Hold Reprint. The printer is now available to other documents.

Printing the remainder of the document

Complete the following steps to print the document from the current page to the end.

The Binary view mode does not support this functionality. The only printing option available to Binary mode is Print Local.

  1. Open the Viewer utility.

  2. Go to the page you want to print.

  3. Click the Print Remainder button on the toolbar or, on the menu bar, select File | Print Remainder. The Viewer closes after printing.

Reprinting documents

You can set a document to reprint now or schedule it to reprint later. You also have the option of reprinting the entire document or a selected range of pages. When using a reprint range to print multiple copies of a document, make sure you set both the reprint starting point and reprint stopping point. If the reprint stopping point is not set, the first copy will start at the specified reprint starting point, but the remaining copies will reprint as the entire document.

Complete the following steps to reprint documents.

The Binary view mode does not support this functionality. The only printing option available to Binary mode is Print Local.

  1. Open the Viewer utility.

  2. Change to the view Text or Record mode.

  3. If necessary, set the reprint range. If you want to print the entire document, check the status bar to make sure the reprint range is START - END. If this doesn't display, on the menu bar, select Edit | Clear Reprint Range.

  1. Click the Reprint Now or Reprint Later button on the toolbar or, on the menu bar, select File | Reprint Now or Reprint Later.

  2. If you select Reprint Now, the Viewer will close and the job will be set to the Ready Reprint state. Jobs will begin printing immediately if their routing criteria matches that of a spool printer and the job is next in the queue.

  3. If you select Reprint Later, the Viewer will close and the job will be set to the Hold Reprint state. The job will not print until you change the document state to Ready and set the routing criteria to match that of a spool printer.

Setting the reprint range

When using a reprint range to print multiple copies of a document, make sure you set both the reprint starting point and reprint stopping point. If the reprint stopping point is not set, the first copy will start at the specified reprint starting point, but the remaining copies will reprint as the entire document.

Complete the following steps to select the range of pages you want to reprint.

The Binary view mode does not support this functionality. The only printing option available to Binary mode is Print Local.

You must specify the reprint range and close the Viewer before you close the Spool Window. The Spool Window must remain open for the document to reprint correctly.

  1. Open the Viewer utility.

  2. Change to the view Text or Record mode.

  3. Set the reprint starting point by displaying the page where you want to start printing and then clicking the Reprint Top button on the toolbar or, on the menu bar, selecting Edit | Set Reprint Top. To indicate the reprint starting point, the page break at the top of the selected page turns green.

  4. Set the reprint stopping point by displaying the page where you want to stop printing and then clicking the Reprint Bottom button on the toolbar or, on the menu bar, selecting Edit | Set Reprint Bottom. To indicate the reprint stopping point, the page break at the bottom of the selected page turns red. Your selected reprint range displays on the status bar at the bottom of the window.
