Printer initialization files contain settings to initialize the printer or printer resources. Use the following procedures to work with printer initialization files.

Creating printer initialization files

You can create printer initialization files in ASCII or EBCDIC format using a corresponding editor (ASCII or hexadecimal). Files you create with an ASCII editor must have the extension .asc. Files you create with a hexadecimal editor must have the extension .bin.

Adding printer initialization files

You can specify printer initialization files for a spool printer when you add a printer or change printer properties.

  1. Open the Printer Properties dialog box using one of the following methods.

  2. Right-click the printer in the Spool Window and select Configure. To access this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.

  3. Open the Configuration Utility. From the Spool Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.

  1. Under Options, Click Advanced. The Advanced Printer Options dialog box displays.

  2. Under Printer initialization files, click Add.

  3. Browse to the folder that contains the initialization file you want to add.

  4. Select the initialization file and click Open.

  5. To add another initialization file for the same printer, repeat steps 2 through 5.

Sending initialization files to the printer

From the Spool Window, you can send a printer initialization file to the printer to reset it. The printer must be disabled before you can send the command. Follow these steps to send an initialization file.

You must create an initialization file and specify it in the Configuration Utility’s spool printer definition before you can use this feature.

  1. Open the Spool Window.

  2. Right-click the desired printer and select Disable.

  3. Right-click the printer again and select Initialize.

Removing printer initialization files

You can remove printer initialization files for a spool printer from the Advanced Printer Options dialog box when you change printer properties.

  1. Open the Printer Properties dialog box using one of the following methods.

  2. Right-click the printer in the Spool Window and select Configure. To access this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.

  3. Open the Configuration Utility. From the Spool Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.

  2. Under Printer initialization files, click Clear.
