After you install the hardware and software, the startup process automatically begins each time you enter BARR/3270.
BARR/3270 can be started using any of the following methods:
enter BARR3270 at the DOS prompt.
start automatically at power-on of the PC.
go to the Installation Description.
call multiple host sites via a configuration file.
Each of the following examples describes one of these methods.
If you notice that keystrokes result in communications errors (X or E as detailed in Chapter 10), use the DOS TSR command BIOS_KEY to eliminate the problem before you execute BARR/3270.
Type BARR3270
On a diskette-based PC, the file AUTOEXEC.BAT was written on the root directory. It contains BARR3270 which causes BARR/3270 to start whenever the PC is started.
On a hard disk-based PC, you must use a text editor to modify the AUTOEXEC procedure.
Type BARR3270 I
When BARR/3270 is loaded, you can call a configuration file which contains the options defined by another version of the program. The character @ followed by the configuration file name tells BARR/3270 to load the configuration file. If the @ character is not followed by a file name, then the default BARR.CFG will be used.
Examples:
BARR3270 @BARR.CFG
BARR3270 I @OLD.CFG
See Section 5.11 Exit and Save Changes for saving changes to a configuration file.
The message in the center of the startup screen notifies you of modem progress.
Your message will depend on which modem you are using: a PC-SYNC, PC-SYNC/2, or external modem.
A message in the center of the screen notifies you that the modem is dialing.
Call progress is reported in the Communication Scope on the top line of the screen. A D means that a dial tone was detected. An R means that the phone line of the modem you are calling is ringing. This should be followed by an A, which means the modem answer tone has been heard.
If your PC is connected by dedicated line or network connection, startup will be automatic.
Startup procedure for external modems:
Turn on the modem.
Press the Talk button, or set the switch to Talk.
Dial the central host computer.
Wait for the computer to answer.
Listen for the high-pitched data tone.
Press the Data or Normal button, or set the switch to Data or Normal.
Hang up handset.
When LOGON fills the screen with big block letters, you know that the SNA Logon line has been received correctly.
Your central host name and the BARR Communication Scope appear on the top line. The scope illustrates the communications activity between your PC and the central host. Chapter 10 explains the display completely.
The second line of the screen is referred to in BARR/3270 as the Status Line where status of devices is displayed. It includes lines received, lines sent, disk status, parallel printer status with the number of print lines from start of file, serial printer status, and time. A vertical line separates the device fields.
DSR=0
In the SDLC version, DSR=0 will appear on the upper left-hand corner of the screen until the connection is made. Otherwise Line Status will appear.
