Using the RJE Diagnostics utility

By using the RJE Diagnostics utility you can monitor communication between the personal computer and the host computer. This topic provides information on using the features of the RJE Diagnostics utility. The RJE Diagnostics utility is made up of three components: the communication scope, link statistics, and bind data.

Before you can use the RJE Console, you must follow the steps in the Getting started with RJE topic and be connected to the host. If you encounter a problem during initial connection, we recommend starting the RJE Diagnostics utility before starting the connection from the RJE Console.

Capturing a trace

You can use the RJE Diagnostics utility to create a trace file of RJE program activity. If you have trouble operating RJE and contact Barr Technical Support, a support analyst may request that you create and send a trace file to determine the cause of the problem.

You can capture a trace for HPR/IP connections. MS/LUA traces must be captured from either Microsoft SNA Server or HIS. Refer to the appropriate Microsoft Help for more information.

If you encounter a problem during initial connection, we recommend starting the RJE Diagnostics utility before starting the connection from the RJE Console.

  1. Open the RJE Diagnostics utility.

  2. On the menu bar, select Trace | On.

  3. Perform the operation that you want to trace.

  4. To stop writing RJE operations to the trace file, on the menu bar, select Trace | Off. The trace file will be saved in the Trace folder.

To view the current trace information, while minimizing the chance of losing important data, click the Stop Trace toolbar button and then immediately click the Start Trace toolbar button to continue tracing.

Clearing the trace file

To clear the contents of the trace file, on the RJE Diagnostics menu bar, select Trace | Clear. If you are troubleshooting a specific operation, it can be helpful to clear the trace file before you perform the operation. This way, the trace file will not contain a lot of extraneous information.

Resetting the link statistics and communication scope

To reset the link statistics and the communication scope, on the RJE Diagnostics menu bar, select Statistics | Reset. If you are troubleshooting a specific operation, it can be helpful to reset the link statistics and the communication scope before you perform the operation. This will make it easier to monitor the results of the operation on the communication scope or link statistics.
