Capturing a trace

The Barr trace facility implements the SNA Server or HIS trace facility to record detailed information about the software events surrounding an error condition. The Barr trace facility automatically gathers and compresses the trace information into a single file for you to provide to Barr Technical Support.

Use the Tracing tab to start and stop the trace. After you start the trace, click OK from the Tracing tab and recreate the error condition or the activities for which you want to gather information.

The Barr trace facility uses the SNA gateway trace facility to gather information about the following activities.

The Barr trace facility adds registry information and event logs to the SNA gateway trace facility. Then it compresses the data into one file for you to provide to Barr Technical Support.

You must set up the registry for the SNA trace before you run the BARR/CHANNEL link service trace for the first time.

To record a trace, follow these steps.

  1. Open Microsoft SNA Manager.

  1. Open the Servers folder in the left column of the screen and select the server you are using.

  2. Open the Link Services folder for the server.

  3. Double-click one of the BARRC1 (Bus & Tag) or BARRE1 (ESCON) link service icon to display the Barr configuration utility.

  4. Select the Tracing tab.

  5. Click Start.

  6. Recreate the problem or software event.

  7. Return to the Tracing tab and click Stop.

  8. Select a file name and directory for the trace file in the Save As dialog box and click Save.

  9. Add any additional comments or information in the Comments and Problem Descriptions dialog box and click OK to compress the trace file.

  10. Send the trace file to Barr Systems. Under Send trace file to Barr Systems, click Automatically to automatically send the file, or click Manually for instructions on manually sending the file.

  11. Click OK to close the configuration utility.
