Configuring the SNA gateway

After you install the Barr software for use with SNA Server or HIS, you need to add and configure the Barr SDLC or Barr X.25 link service and connection.

Complete the following steps to configure the Microsoft SNA gateway.

Installing the IBM X.25 link service

If you are using an X.25 link service on an HIS system, you must install the IBM X.25 link service. If you are using SNA Server, the X.25 link service is automatically installed during SNA Server installation. If you modified your SNA Server settings and disabled the link service installation, follow these steps to install the link service.

  1. Insert the SNA gateway CD into the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Right-click Start on the taskbar, and click Explore.

  3. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive and double-click Setup.exe.

  4. From the startup screen, click 3rd party link services.

  5. On the Welcome screen, click Next.

  6. Under Hardware Support, select IBM Corporation and click Next.

  7. Click Finish. The wizard will continue with the installation of the third party link service.

  8. Continue clicking Next, and then click Finish to complete the installation.

Adding and configuring the link service

Follow these steps to add and configure a link service from the Microsoft SNA Manager.

  1. Open Microsoft SNA Manager.

  2. For SNA Server – From the taskbar, click Start | Programs | Microsoft SNA Server | Manager.

  3. For HIS – From the taskbar, click Start | Programs | Host Integration Server | Manager.

  1. Open the Servers folder in the left column of the screen and select the server to which you want to add the link service.

  2. Add the link service.

  3. For SNA Server – On the menu bar, select Insert | Link Service. The Insert Link Service dialog box displays.

  4. For HIS – Right-click the Link Services folder and select New | Link Service. The Insert Link Service dialog box displays.

  1. If you will be using an SDLC connection, select the Barr Systems SDLC Link Service. If you will be using an X.25 connection, select the Barr Systems X.25 Link Service.

  2. Click Add to display the BARR/SYNC for Microsoft Networks utility.

  3. Use the Link tab to configure the Barr link service.

  4. Use the Adapter tab to configure your adapter settings.

  5. If you are using an X.25 connection, select the X.25 tab. Match the Local NUA address as assigned by the network administrator and set any other parameters that differ from the defaults.

  6. When you finish configuring the device driver, click Apply. Click OK to close the BARR/SYNC for Microsoft Networks utility.

  7. When the Insert Link Service dialog box displays, click Finish. The BarrS1 or BarrX1 icon displays in the Microsoft SNA Manager's Link Services window. Messages are displayed while the system network bindings are updated.

Inserting and configuring the connection

Follow these steps to insert and configure a connection from the Microsoft SNA Manager.

  1. Open Microsoft SNA Manager.

  2. For SNA Server – From the taskbar, click Start | Programs | Microsoft SNA Server | Manager.

  3. For HIS – From the taskbar, click Start | Programs | Host Integration Server | Manager.

  1. Add a connection.

  2. For SNA Server – On the menu bar, select Insert | Connection | SDLC or X.25, depending on your connection type.

  3. For HIS – Right-click the Connections folder and select New | SDLC or X.25, depending on your connection type.

  1. From the General tab, select the Barr link service from the Link Service drop-down list. Continue to configure your connection as needed. (See the Microsoft SNA Server or HIS Help for more information.)

  2. Click OK to save the configuration.
