From the Configuration Utility's Spool
Printers tab, you define, modify, and remove spool printers. Spool
printers are used only for outbound spool data. They route files from
the Barr spool queue to a physical destination, such as a laser printer,
an NJE or RJE host, or other locations on the LAN. The settings you specify
for spool printers control the initial printer state at spool startup
(whether all printers or individual printers will be stopped by default
when you start the spool), forms overlay selection and processing, use
of banners and trailers, and printer initialization files.
The options you specify for a spool printer affect all documents you
send to it. In the following instructions, steps 1 through 4 are required,
steps 5 and 6 are optional, and step 7 is only required if spool documents
are in destination-ready format Data formatted for its ultimate destination.
For example, if the data is intended for a printer, it becomes destination-ready
when it gets converted to the format the intended printer requires.
or are in AFP format.
In the Name
box, enter the printer name. This name displays in the Spool
Window’s printer list and is called the spool printer. The printer
name cannot contain a backslash '\'.
Under Physical
printer, select Existing
or New.
Select Existing
to choose a printer from a list of defined Windows printers. If you are
a member of the Administrators
group and select a printer using a Barr port, you can click Modify
Port to modify the port settings.
If you are not able to view network printers, the user
who created the connections
to the network printers might have been logged on to the wrong user
account. When you create the network printers, you must be logged on to
the same user account specified during installation. Once the printers
are created, all users with valid user
rights in the Barr Enterprise Print Server can log on and the network
printers will be available.
Select New
to create a new printer for printing to a channel printer, printing to
a TCP/IP print queue, printing to a Xerox EPS, routing to another BARR/SPOOL,
writing to an IP socket, or writing to disk. This is the physical device
to which the spool documents will be routed. Before creating a new printer,
all printers in the Spool
Window must be disabled.
To add a printer,
you must be a member of the Administrators
group. If you are a member of the Printer
Operators or Server Operators
group or a Power User on a workstation,
follow the steps for creating
a printer manually.
Click Banners
to select the header and trailer
files and specify how they will be applied to print jobs (optional). The
Banner Options dialog box
displays.
Click Overlays
to setup overlays and configure
how they will be applied to print jobs (optional). The Overlay
Options dialog box displays.
Click Advanced.
If spool documents are already in destination-ready format or are in AFP
format, you must select the corresponding Special
data handling option. The Advanced
Printer Options dialog box displays.
Click OK.
Importing spool printers
Complete the following steps to import spool printers from a configuration
file. The configuration file will contain spool printers, along with their
associated physical printers and ports.
To import printers, you must be a member of
the Administrators group.
From the Spool
Printers tab, click Import.
The Import Printer Configuration
dialog box displays.
Select the configuration
file you want to import and then click Open.
Configuration files will have a .bpc or .cfg extension.
A
log file is created during the import. We recommend that you view the
log file to verify that the import completed successfully. The log file
is located in the \\Program Files\Common Files\Barr\Log folder. The file
name is PrinterConfig.log.
We recommend that you select
each spool printer you import and click Modify
to verify your printer settings. The Printer
Properties dialog box displays.
Click Banners
to display the Banner Options
dialog box and Overlays to
display the Overlay Options dialog
box. From these dialog boxes, make sure any specified resource files
(headers, trailers, or overlays) exist on the computer where the printers
have been imported and are located in the appropriate folders. The files
must be located in the path specified on the Resource
Folders tab.
The resource file
are not included in the printer configuration file.
Click OK
to close the Configuration Utility.
Click Yes
to restart the BARR
SpoolCore service for changes
to take effect.
Exporting spool printers
Complete the following steps to export spool printers to a configuration
file. The configuration file can then be imported
by another BARR/SPOOL, making it easy to share printers with multiple
copies of the Spool Window.
From the Spool
Printers tab, select the printers you would like to export and click
Export. The Export
Printer Configuration dialog box displays.
You can select
multiple nonadjacent printers by clicking a single printer, and then holding
down the CTRL key while you click other printers. You can select multiple
adjacent printers by selecting a single printer, and then holding down
the SHIFT key while you click the last printer.
Navigate to the folder
where you want to export the file, specify the file name, and then click
Save. The file will contain the
selected spool printers, along with their associated physical printers
and ports. By default, the configuration file is named BarrPrinters.bpc
and saved in the \\Program Files\Barr\Spooler\Settings
folder. By default, only Administrators have access rights to the default
folder. If you are not an Administrator, navigate to another folder.
Review the log file created
during the export to verify that the export completed successfully. The
log file is located in the \\Program Files\Common Files\Barr\Log folder.
The file name is PrinterConfig.log.
Click OK
to close the Configuration Utility.
Selecting advanced
spool printer options
You can select a printer initialization file, page layout, code page,
and other options from the Advanced
Printer Options dialog box. This dialog box displays when you add
or modify a printer from the Configuration Utility's Spool
Printers tab.
You can now open a spool printer directly
from the Spool Window.
Right-click the spool printer and select Configure.
The Configuration Utility will display with the selected printer open
for editing. The spool printer must be in the Disabled state and you must
have the Configure - Printer and Disk
Settings user access right.
If necessary, under Field selection specify the header
field whose value will determine the specifications of the Page
layout. If a field is not specified, or the field does not match a
Page Layout, then the layout
with the name "<default>" is used.
If spool documents are already in destination-ready format
or are in AFP format, you must select the corresponding Special
data handling option from the Advanced
Printer Options dialog box.
Removing spool printers
Complete the following steps to delete a spool printer.
If you are a member of the Administrators
group, you can remove the physical printer as well as the spool printer.
If you are not a member of the Administrators
group, only the spool printer will be removed.
A dialog box displays confirming
the deletion. From this dialog you can also select to delete the physical
printer associated with the spool printer. Click Yes
to delete both the spool printer and the associated physical printer.
Click No to only delete the spool
printer. Click Cancel to cancel
the deletion.
Before
you delete printers, all printers in the Spool
Window must be Disabled.
Viewing or
modifying spool printer properties
To view or modify a spool printer's properties, complete the following
steps.
Right-click the printer
in the Spool Window
and select Configure. To access
this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.
Open
the Configuration Utility. From the Spool
Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.
Modify the printer settings
as needed.
If you are a member
of the Administrators group
and you are modifying a printer that uses a Barr port, you can
click Modify Port to modify the
port settings.
You can set all printers to start each time you start the spool. All
printers that have an initial state of Ready will begin printing immediately
at software startup.
You can set all printers to be stopped at spool startup. When printers
are stopped, an image displays in the activity indicator column to the
left of each printer's name. Stopped mode does not affect the printer
state field.
Starting the spool with all printers stopped gives the operator time
to set printer criteria and document and printer states at software startup,
before files can begin printing.
If you want to stop spool operation for a short time, you can enable
Stops All Printers mode before stopping the BARR SpoolCore service. This
prevents files from printing or being routed if a Barr software process
inadvertently starts the BARR SpoolCore service. (The BARR SpoolCore service
can be started automatically at computer startup, automatically by BARR/SPOOL
components, or manually by users.)
Stopping the spool printers does not prevent documents from being received.
It only prevents them from leaving the spool.
Do not configure stopped mode for software startup if you
want the software to start while unattended. During unattended operation,
nothing will print until an operator intervenes.
Complete the following steps to start the software with all spool printers
stopped.
You can choose to extract the FCB file name from the FCB name field,
NDHGFCB, or
the form name field, NDHGFORM.
Complete the following steps to select what field will be used.
The Select
FCB using option is a global setting that affects all spool
printers.
From the Spool
Printers tab, next to Select FCB
using, select FCB name
or Form name. By default, FCB name is selected. Barr DOS upgrades
should select Form name.
Disabling
individual spool printers at spool startup
You can set the initial state of each spool printer for spool startup.
By default, spool printers start in the Ready
state, able to route documents that have matching criteria. You can configure
individual spool printers to start in the Disabled
state, so that they require operator action to begin printing.
Right-click the printer
in the Spool Window
and select Configure. To access
this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.
Open
the Configuration Utility. From the Spool
Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.
Under Options,
select Printer in ‘Disabled’ state at
startup.
Click OK
twice.
Hiding spool printers
Complete the following steps to allow spool printers to be hidden from
the Spool Window. To
perform these steps, you must be assigned the Printer
- Show All user access right.
Right-click the printer
in the Spool Window
and select Configure. To access
this option, the printer must be disabled and you must have the Configure - Printer and Disk Settings user access right.
Open
the Configuration Utility. From the Spool
Printers tab, select the spool printer, and then click Modify.
